Ad of the Week for August 30, 2010

Powerful ad from England for St. John Ambulance. It would be so easy for an ad like this to be distasteful or morbid, but they were sensitive enough to make it work. The ad points to a very specific outcome that they would like in response, to send a text message for info about their programs so people can be better trained to help others. What I like is the gritty “realness” of the layout, using wrinkled paper and a simple black and white photograph, compelling you to read what it says. People love to read notes.

The copy is too hard to read in this small web-resolution image, but it reads, “I had chest pains. Probably just heartburn. I wasn’t that worried. Nobody was. But then nobody had learnt first aid. Nobody recognised the signs. That I was having a heart attack. And by the time they did, by the time they called an ambulance, it was too late.” It ends with simply his name, date range, and the clean call to action already mentioned.

About the Ad of the Week

Millions of new ads are crafted around the world every day. A handful are worthy of attention. Of those, a small selection are the source of inspiration and insight for others. George looks for ads with special qualities. These might stand out because of a great concept, art direction, photography, or some other element setting them apart from the others. A new one is posted every week.
